Behind the name J.J. Zerr lies the remarkable journey of Jon Zachery. A man whose life has been defined by devotion, resilience, and an unwavering sense of humor. His story is not only about military service or literary accomplishments, but about love, family, and the enduring power of words.
Anchored by Love
Since 1958, Jon has shared his life with Karen, his “one and only squeeze.” Through decades of deployments, relocations, and the challenges of raising six children, Karen has been the steady heart of their family. Jon affectionately calls her “the boss of everything,” a title she has earned through years of patience, strength, and grace. Their partnership is the foundation of his life; a love story that continues to inspire his writing and his outlook.
A Career of Service
Jon’s professional journey began in the U.S. Navy, where he served for thirty-six years, including combat tours during the Vietnam War. He retired in 1995 as a rear admiral, having flown hundreds of missions and shouldering the weight of leadership. His career demanded significant sacrifice, often leaving Karen to manage the home front alone. However, together they faced the challenges with courage and humor. After his military career, Jon transitioned into the aerospace industry, managing defense programs until his retirement in 2007.
From Admiral to Author
In 2010, Jon embraced a new calling: writing. Under the name J.J. Zerr, he has published twelve novels and a collection of short stories, primarily in historical fiction. His works, including A Ticket to Hell on Other Me’s Sins, COP Corner, Guerilla Bride, The Happy Life of Preston Katt, War Stories, Holy Crusade, and Sundown Town, reflect themes of loyalty, conviction, and the complexities of human character. His writing is filled with authenticity, shaped by his own experiences of war, leadership, and family.
Jon’s literary journey has also been marked by humor and humility. He proudly recalls finishing tenth in the Writer’s Digest poetry contest, joking that the best part was winning back his entry fee. He also placed tenth in the Missouri Liar’s Contest, still undecided whether to be pleased or disappointed.
Reaching Readers Worldwide
J.J. Zerr’s books have been featured at the Miami International Book Fair and the Frankfurt International Book Fair, and in publications such as the New York Times, LA Times, Reader’s Digest, and Publishers Weekly. His stories resonate with readers who appreciate both historical depth and the humanity laced throughout them.
A Note of Gratitude
Jon’s message to his readers is simple yet heartfelt: “One of the things I appreciate is editors. A thing I appreciate even more is readers. Thank you.”
It is a reminder that his work is not just about history or fiction. It is about connection, gratitude, and the shared journey between writer and reader.
